If the first blog got you curious about public policy, you might still have questions like, “Isn’t it too complex for someone like me?” or “Does policy even affect my life?”
Spoiler alert: It absolutely does!
But don’t worry, you’re not alone in thinking that public policy feels distant or out of reach.
In India especially, the concept is often tangled in myths that make it seem inaccessible.
Let’s break it down myth by myth!
Myth 1: Public Policy Doesn’t Affect Me
Reality: It impacts everything, from the air you breathe to the jobs you apply for.
Why does Delhi’s pollution worsen every Diwali? How do welfare schemes like PM Kisan put money in farmers’ hands? Why do onion prices suddenly skyrocket? These are all issues shaped by public policy. Whether it’s education loans, internet access in rural India, or startup funding, public policy is what connects the dots.
Myth 2: It’s Too Complicated for Ordinary People
Reality: Public policy is just problem-solving at a big scale.
At its core, public policy is about asking, “What’s the problem?” and “How do we fix it?”
For example, when Mumbai faced rising floods, policies about drainage systems and climate resilience came into play. Similarly, India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transformed how we send money.
Myth 3: UPSC Is the Only Way to Get into Public Policy
Reality: Ah, the UPSC - the holy grail for anyone thinking of a career in public policy, right?
Well, not exactly: it’s just one way, and definitely not the only fun way! Public policy is a massive field, and there are plenty of other ways to make an impact. Whether through specialized degrees in public policy, fellowships, working with think tanks and NGOs, don’t let the myth of the UPSC hold you back from diving into a world of exciting policy possibilities!
Myth 4: Public Policy Is Only About Politics
Reality: Public policy goes way beyond elections and political parties. From how your city handles water shortages to why your favorite OTT platform charges so much, public policy shapes nearly everything. It’s the set of rules, plans, and actions governments take to tackle real-world issues. So even if you’re not into politics, you’re definitely living the outcomes of public policy!
Myth 5: Only Experts Can Influence Policy
Reality: If you can tweet, protest, or sign a petition, you can influence policy.
Movements like the 2012 protests after the Nirbhaya case or the farmers' protests of 2020-2021 show how public pressure can push governments to rethink policies. In today’s digital age, your voice on social media or your presence in a local campaign can be the spark for real change.
The more we understand public policy, the better equipped we are to advocate for our needs, hold decision-makers accountable, and create lasting, positive change.
Remember, shaping policy is not just a job for governments - it’s a collaborative effort that thrives on the voices and participation of informed citizens.
